Customize Lead Source Values

One of the key pipeline management fields is Lead Source, which describes where a contact came from, such as:

  • Client Portal
  • Direct Mail
  • Internet
  • Lead List
  • LOS Import
  • Referral

While these are examples of widely-used Lead Source selections, they are not the only possibilities for the field. You can customize the Lead Source dropdown to include exactly the choices that fit with your business model.

Lead Source is editable from the Table Editor screen (in the Admin Tools Menu Group) or directly from within the Contact screen. We will focus here on the latter, since many times you will find that you need to add a new Lead Source type when you are adding or editing a contact.

From the Contact screen, click on the ellipse (Edit Lookup Values) to the right of the Lead Source field (Figure 1):

(Figure 1: Lead Source - Edit Lookup Values)

In the Lookup Edit screen, click on the area near the top labeled “Click here to add a new lookup item“ (Figure 2):

(Figure 2: Lookup Edit - Add New)

Type a Description (“Radio” in this example) for your new value (Figure 3):

(Figure 3: Lookup Edit - Add New Value)

Press Enter so that the new value moves to the end of the list, then click Save (Figure 4):

Note that after you click Save, the Lookup Edit screen closes.

Since you are going to add Lead Descriptions that go with the new Lead Source, you need to know the new Lead Source ID when you go to add new Lead Descriptions, because they correspond to each other the same way that Status corresponds to Status Description.

To get the Lead Source ID, simply click on the Edit Lookup Values ellipse again to re-open the Lookup Edit screen. You can now jot down the Lead Source ID (10021) and then click Close (Figure 5):

Click on the Edit Lookup Values ellipse for Lead Description (Figure 6):

Just like before, click on the line where it says “Click here to add a new lookup item“ to add a new value (Figure 7):

(Figure 7: Lead Description - Lookup Edit - Add New)

Type a Description (“1090 AM” in this example) and the Lead Source ID (10021) for this new item (Figure 8):

(Figure 8: Lead Description - Lookup Edit - Add New Value)

Like before, press Enter to have the new item move to the end of the list. You can add another Lead Description (98.1 FM in this example) and Lead Source ID (10021) while you are still in this screen. Press Enter to move it to the end, then click Save (Figure 9):

(Figure 9: Lead Description - Lookup Edit - Add New Value - Save)

Now open the Lead Source dropdown and you can see your new item (“Radio”) on the list (Figure 10):

(Figure 10: Lead Source Dropdown)

Click on “Radio” to select the new value, then open the Lead Description dropdown (Figure 11):

(Figure 11: Lead Description Dropdown)

Select one of the new Lead Descriptions and click Save (Figure 12):

Using this procedure, you can customize both the Lead Source and Lead Description values to what you need while you are in the Contact screen.
